In course assessments: In course assessments related to subjects taught in the 1st Year. Practical Tests including Objective Structured Practical Veterinary Examinations (OSPVEs), structured orals or spot tests related to subjects taught in the 1st year.6. Requirement to be completed to permit entry to the examination: To have passed a qualifying examination formed of a summative MCQ examination testing factual knowledge and conceptual understanding, offered at the end of Term 1 with a re-sit before the end of the first week of Term Three. 7. 7.1 7.2 7.3 7.4 Marking Criteria: Essays and Reports College Common (0-10) Grading Scheme. Multiple Choice Questions and Extended Matching Questions The number of marks available for each type of question will be clearly stated on the examination paper. A question left unanswered or deleted by the candidate will score zero. The pass mark for the MCQ examination as a whole will be set according to approved and accepted standard setting protocols, normalised and then scaled. OSPVEs and Spot Test A pass mark will be set for each station. The pass mark for the examination as a whole will be set according to approved and accepted standard setting protocols, including if appropriate a minimum number of stations to be passed, then normalised and scaled. Structured Orals Structured oral examinations will be marked out of a maximum of ten marks with students accumulating marks by answering questions of increasing complexity. Highest marks will be obtained by students demonstrating integration of their knowledge. 8. And To have achieved a pass mark in the Term 1 Assignment. Should the candidate achieve less than the pass mark at their first attempt, they must resubmit another Assignment before the re-sit examinations commence. And To have satisfactorily completed the ICT Skills test. Candidates who do not pass at the first attempt will be required to resit only components i to iv listed in 8 above. Resit Following scaling of the marks, an overall mark of 50%, with no mark below 40% in any of components i to iv. And To have achieved a pass mark in the Term 1 Report. And To have satisfactorily completed the ICT Skills test. 10. 10.1 10.2 10.3 10.4 Consequences of Failure A candidate who fails the qualifying examination or the full examination overall at their first attempt is required to take the resit or withdraw from the course. A candidate who fails only the Term 1 Assignment must resubmit a Revised Assignment before the re-sit examinations commence. A candidate who fails overall and fails the Term 1 Assignment must resubmit a Revised Assignment before the re-sit examinations commence. A candidate who fails the qualifying examination or the full examination at their second attempt will be required to withdraw from the course. S/he has a right of appeal as described in College Regulations.11. 11.1 11.2 11.3Classification A candidate who, at the first attempt, obtains an overall average mark of 70% or more, with a mark of at least 65% in each of components i to iv listed in 8 above, including a mark of at least 70% in two of these components, will be awarded a pass with distinction. A candidate who, at the first attempt, obtains an average mark of 65% or more , but who does not meet the criteria for the award of a pass with distinction, will be awarded a pass with merit, provided each of the components listed in 8 above is passed. A candidate who passes Year 1 but does not proceed with study will be eligible for the award of Certificate of Higher Education. 12. Disclosure of Marks Results will be published by candidate number.13. Absence from in course summative assessments: Where a student has an allowable absence, s/he will be marked absent (A) from the summative assessment at the end of Term 2, and the marks for the remaining components of the examination will be scaled accordingly.14.Late submission of work Reports or Project work submitted after the due deadline will be given a mark no greater than a bare pass. The only exception being if the student has been given an extension by the relevant tutor for an allowable reason.15.Requirements to Progress to the next stage of the course. In addition to passing overall (see 9) a student must have completed at least 6 weeks of AHEMS prior to the start of year 2.
