The assessment will take the form of written papers including MCQ and short questions. Practical: A practical test of one hour duration. Research Project: A project report (in dissertation form) of 10,000 words. Oral Exam: An oral examination of at least 30 minutes based upon the project. Mark Allocation for Project: The Supervisors Mark (5 Marks) See College Common scheme for Supervisors Marks The Project Report (40 Marks) The report will be marked independently by one internal and one external examiner, who, after consultation, will reach an agreed mark out of 100. In the evaluation of the project report the following aspects should be considered in arriving at the final mark using appropriate multiples of the College-wide criteria. Presentation: Organisation and balance of the report; following the required format, (including citation and listing of references); appropriate and informative use of well-constructed graphs, tables and diagrams (20 marks) Introduction and Literature Review The extent to which the candidate has produced a balanced summary and critical assessment of knowledge pertinent to the project; and justified the stated aims/hypotheses (20 marks) Research Methodology and Findings The extent to which the candidate has produced a concise but comprehensive and accurate account of the techniques employed and results obtained, including appropriate statistical analyses (30 marks) Discussion Interpretation and discussion of research findings within the framework of the stated aims of the project and in a wider scientific context (30 marks). The total of 100 marks will then be scaled to 40. 8. 8.1 8.2 Requirements to Pass Overall In order to gain the BSc with Honours: An average mark of 40% aggregated from the marks listed in 8 above, including an average mark of 40% for each of the following three components: Component 1 = 2 written papers Component 2 = 2 In-course assessments + practical exam Component 3 = Research Project + Oral Exam In order to gain the BSc: An average mark of 40% or more aggregated from the marks listed in 8 above and at least 40% in the combined project marks and at least 40% in one of following: Component 1 or Component 2. 9.Consequences of Failure A candidate who fails will not be awarded the degree. S/he will have a right of appeal as described in College Regulations. 10.Honours Classification and Award First Class An average of 70% and not less than 60% for any of the three Components listed in 9 above. Upper Second Class An average of 60% and not less than 50% for any of the three Components listed in 9 above Lower Second Class An average of 50% and not less than 40% for any of the three Components listed in 9 above. Third Class An average of 40% and not less than 40% for any of the three Components listed in 9 above.
