Applicable to Academic Year: 2010/11 4. Aspects of course covered by Examination: 1. Didactic Component Module 1. Foundation Module 2. Conservation Biology Module 3. Ecological Health Module 4. Conservation and Health 2. Practical Component 3. Research Component 5. Form of Examination: 1. Written Papers: There will be four modular examinations comprising problem-solving essays and multiple choice questions (following the taught component of modules 1, 2, 3 and 4). Module 1 exam may also have short-answer questions. 2. Coursework a) Scientific Presentations b) Written Reports 3. Research Project a) Grant Application d) Research Project Report - one scientific paper of up to 5000 words (excluding references) suitable for submission for publication in a quality, peer reviewed journal. c) Oral Defence 4. Competence in Pathological Procedures, Zoo Management and Wild Animal Conservation and Management Check List (for the assessment of practical experience of the Practical Studies component) 6Requirement for Entry to the Examination None 7. Marking Criteria: - Examination essays, coursework, grant applications and research project (written report and oral examination) will be marked according to the Colleges Common Grading Scheme. - Multiple Choice Questions: the number of marks available for each question will be clearly stated on the examination paper. A question left unanswered or deleted by the candidate will score zero. - Competence in Pathological Procedures, Zoo Management and Wild Animal Conservation and Management Check List: i) All candidates must have been certified competent in selected basic pathological procedures by one of the Veterinary Officers or research veterinary surgeons of the Zoological Society of London or one of the veterinary surgeons from the RVC and ii) All candidates must have been certified competent in selected zoo management or wild animal conservation and management procedures by the appropriate keeper/team leader/section leader/ curators of the Zoological Society of London or rotation leaders of a partner conservation organisation 8. Allocation of Marks and any additional requirements Allocation of marks is blueprinted against the number of teaching or research weeks in each module: Teaching Component Teaching Module 1 - 12% Teaching Module 2 -8% Teaching Module 3 - 20% Teaching Module 4 - 20% Practical Component Practical Studies 5% Competence in Pathological Procedures, Zoo Management and Wild Animal Conservation and Management Check List Research Component Grant Application 5% Scientific Paper 25% Oral Defence 5% Presentation of the findings of the Research Component at the MSc Wild Animal Biology and Health Student Conference 9.Requirements to Pass Overall: To have achieved a mark of at least 50% from the composite of the components as defined in 8 above and not less than 50% in the Teaching Component, 50% in the Research Component and 40% in the Oral Defence and a) Competence in Pathological Procedures, Zoo Management and Wild Animal Conservation and Management Check List: b) Presentation of the findings of the Research Component at the MSc Wild Animal Biology and Health Student Conference 10. Consequences of Failure: All candidates who fail at the first attempt have the right of resit. A candidate who fails at the second attempt will be required to relinquish the course. They will have, however, a right of appeal as described in College Regulations. 11. Classification and Awards: From the mark taken from all of the components defined in 8 above (plus the additional requirements of a pass in the a) Competence in Pathological Procedures, Zoo Management and Wild Animal Conservation and Management Check List and b) Presentation of the findings of the Research Component at the MSc Wild Animal Biology and Health Student Conference). 75% or more at the first attempt Distinction 65-74% at the first attempt Merit 50-64% Pass 12. Disclosure of Marks Results will be published by candidate number. 13. Absence and Summative in-course assessment An allowable absence is one that is for a significant unforeseeable event such as illness. Any other foreseeable absence will only be considered allowable if agreed by APRICOT and this will only apply in very strictly limited circumstances. A student absent for any other reason will be awarded 0 (zero) for the assessment. 14. Late submission of work Written reports submitted after the due deadline cannot receive a mark greater than zero. The research project reports submitted after the due deadline cannot receive a mark greater than a bare pass.
