Applicable to Academic Year: for students commencing the course in March 2010 4. Aspects of course covered by Examination: all subjects taught on the course 5. Form of Examination: Written papers: Paper 1: 2 hour paper including mix of long and short answer questions and MCQs Paper 2: 3 hour paper including mix of long and short answer questions and MCQs In-course assessment: Assignment 1:Literature Review (2500 words) Assignment 2: Research Methodology proposal (2500 words) and presentation Practical exams: Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) to assess practical and communication skills Spot test to assess clinical recognition and problem solving In total the exams will be of approx 3 hours duration Research project: A research paper of a maximum of 5000 words in length (excluding references) suitable for publication in a peer reviewed journal Oral exam: An oral exam of approx 25 minutes based upon the project Clinical syllabus Completed over the 2 year duration of the course 6. Marking Criteria: Written examinations (except MCQs), in-course assessment, research project and oral defence - see 0 100 Common Grading Scheme. MCQs - the number of marks available for each question will be clearly stated on the examination paper. A question left unanswered or deleted by the candidate will score zero. OSCE and spot test will have pass marks determined by RVC standard setting procedures. 7. Allocation of Marks and any additional requirements Overall: Paper 1: 15 Paper 2: 20 In-course assessment: 10 (5 marks each) Spot test: 20 Research project and oral defence: 35 (31.5 written, 3.5 oral)Paper 1 The mark allocation within the paper will be as follows: Essay question section: 25 marks Short question section: 50 marks MCQs section: 25 marks The total of marks for each paper will then be scaled to 15 Paper 2 The mark allocation within the paper will be as follows: Essay question section: 40 marks Short question section: 40 marks MCQs section: 40 marks The total of marks for each paper will then be scaled to 20 OSCE examination pass/fail Completion of the clinical syllabus pass/fail 8.Requirements to Pass Overall and Progress to the Next Stage 8.1 Requirements to Progress onto the Masters project In order to progress onto the Masters project, students will be expected to achieve an overall mark of 55% by the end of the first year (to include Assignments 1 and 2 and Paper 1). Requirements to Pass Overall 8.2 Requirements to pass the MSc To have achieved a weighted, aggregated average of at least 50% from the two written papers and the spot test. AND To have achieved a pass in the OSCE examination AND To have achieved a weighted, aggregated average of at least 50% for the research project, oral and written assignments combined provided that at least 50% has been achieved for the research project and oral combined. Students are required to submit their raw project data electronically at the time of submitting their research project; failure to do so will be deemed an incomplete submission. 8.3 Requirements to pass the MSc in Veterinary Physiotherapy To have met the requirements in 8.1 and to have completed and passed the clinical syllabus. 8.4 Requirements to pass the MSc in Animal Rehabilitation To have met the requirements in 8.1  9. Consequences of Failure 9.1 A student who fails at the first attempt shall have a right to resit. S/he will be required to resit those papers, examinations or assessments that were failed (below 40%) at the first attempt. 9.2 A student who passes all assessments but fails the research project and oral defence component shall be entitled to the award of Postgraduate Diploma. 9.3 A student who fails at the second attempt will be required to relinquish the course. S/he will have a right of appeal as described in College Regulations. 10. Classification and Awards: From the combined mark taken from all of the components defined in 7 above. 75% or more at first attempt: Distinction 65-74% at first attempt: Merit 50-64%: Pass 11. Disclosure of Marks Results will be published by candidate number. 12. Absence and Summative in-course assessment An allowable absence is one that is for a significant unforeseeable event such as illness. Any other foreseeable absence will only be considered allowable if agreed by APRICOT and this will only apply in very strictly limited circumstances. A student absent for any other reason will be awarded 0 (zero) for the assessment. 13. Penalties for late submission of work/exceeding word limit Research projects submitted after the due deadline will be given a mark no greater than a bare pass. The only exception being if the student has been given an extension by the relevant tutor for an allowable reason. Assignments submitted after the due deadline will be given a mark of 0 (zero).
