The MVetMed is the credit-rated Master's course integral to the delivery of all residency programmes at the RVC across multiple clinical disciplines.

Modular Course

The MVetMed is divided into Research and Didactic modules, which each span the 3yrs of training, as well as annual Clinical modules.

Research module

This includes taught courses on topics such as statistical analysis, digital literacy and scientific writing skills, which support the resident to perform, present and publish an original research project.

Didactic module

This consists of attendance and presentation at journal clubs and book clubs which focus on acquisition of a substantial body of knowledge and literature at the forefront of each specialty to support both the development of specialist clinical skills, as well as directly help prepare the resident for specialty board examinations. The resident will develop and practice critical article appraisal skills for lifelong learning and best practice of evidence based veterinary medicine.

Clinical modules

These modules are centred around the clinical activities of the resident in their speciality service. Residents will receive continuous informal feedback on their case management and participation in clinical rounds, as well as other areas including communication skills, teamwork and professional behaviour. Formal verbal and written summative feedback and learning opportunities will be scheduled using regular Work Place Based Assessments (WPBA). WPBA include Mini Clinical examination (MiniCeX), Case Based Discussion (CbD), Direct Observation of a Procedural Skill (DOPS), as well as multisource feedback (MSF). WPBA occur over multiple occasions and lead to documented evidence of developing clinical competence as well as providing the timely feedback that is essential to enhancing residents’ learning.  

The overall aims of the MVetMed programme are to produce graduates that are able to:

  • Satisfy the credentials requirements and pass the examinations of their European or American Veterinary Specialty Colleges.
  • Have the relevant speciality specific experience and expertise in clinical veterinary medicine or veterinary pathology, including being able to demonstrate self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate a systematic acquisition and understanding of a substantial body of knowledge which is at the forefront of their specialties discipline or area of professional practice.
  • Are able to deal with complex clinical issues both systematically and creatively, make sound judgements, sometimes in the absence of complete information or in light of unforeseen problems, and communicate their conclusions clearly to specialists and non- specialists.
  • Are of the highest quality, with additional personal, communication, teaching and professional skills, poised to take up leading positions as veterinary clinicians or pathologists in academia worldwide, in private practice, or in industry, where they will continue to advance their specialty knowledge, skills and understanding
  • .Can use the critical analysis skills and research experience they have developed during the programme to conduct clinical research projects, continue to publish in the veterinary literature, as well as continue lifelong learning and best practice of evidence based veterinary medicine in their clinical practice.
