These residencies are designed for qualified veterinary graduates holding a degree registrable with the  who wish to specialise in specific disciplines related to small or large animal practice.

All Residents are also registered for a Master's degree in Veterinary Medicine (MVetMed). 

This is a three year training programme that fulfils the credential requirements of the European or American College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia. Residents will be supported by a team of four ECVAA Diplomates, three experienced staff clinicians and twelve anaesthesia nurses. An anaesthesia service is provided for the full range of disciplines in the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals (QMHA), as well as for the Equine Referral Hospital (ERH), Farm Animal service and the exotics service of the Beaumont Animal Hospital for Animals (BSAH). Residents will be able to develop their clinical anaesthesia and analgesia skills allowing them to successfully manage both routine and complex cases in a wide variety of species, as well as becoming adept at coping with complications.

There is a large clinical component to the programme but you will also be involved in student teaching and clinical research. Residents will have the opportunity to spend time with other clinical disciplines within the RVC and you will be expected to develop a thorough knowledge of the natural course and therapeutics of medical and surgical diseases in the practice of veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia.

You will also need to understand the problems encountered in the application of diagnostic techniques such as radiographic procedures, ultrasound scanning and MR imaging, and the influence of anaesthetic methods on these problems.

Selection criteria for the Residency in Anaesthesia

Along with the attributes and qualifications required it is necessary you have:

• Completed a 1-1.5 years of rotating internship, or having 1-1.5 years of equivalent clinical experience validated by the ECVAA Credentials and Education Committee providing evidence of commitment  to growth and development of the field of anaesthesia and analgesia.
